Summary

Overview: On the Discounts page you create promo codes that customers type at checkout, or automatic discounts that apply on their own. A discount can take an amount off, take a percentage off, or give free shipping. You choose which products, store locations and customers it covers, a minimum order, a usage limit and the dates it runs.

Prerequisites:

  • A store on the Launch, Grow, Scale or Premium Trial plan.
  • Store owner access, or a team member with Store settings & administration access.
  • At least one store location. See How to Add Your Store Location.
  • Published products, if the discount is only for some products or categories. See How to Add Your First Product and How to Organize Products with Categories.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Open the Discounts page

  1. In the sidebar, click Marketing, then Discounts.
  2. Click Create Discount. The full Create discount page opens. Use Back to Discounts at the top to leave without saving.

Step 2: Choose the discount method and name

  1. Under Choose a discount method, click one of the tiles:
    • Automatic: Applies at checkout when the conditions are met. No code needed. This tile is already selected when the page opens.
    • Coupon code: Customers type a code at checkout.
    • Senior/PWD (Philippine stores only): the 20% statutory discount and VAT exemption for customers whose ID you approved. It is a free add-on, so the tile may show a Free add-on badge with its own Activate button. Setting it up works differently from the other two: see How to Set Up the Senior Citizen and PWD Discount.
  2. Type the name or code:
    • For Automatic, type a Discount Name (up to 30 characters).
    • For Coupon code, type the Discount Code (up to 30 characters, letters and numbers only, no spaces). Customers must type the code exactly as you wrote it, including capital letters.

Step 3: Choose the discount type and value

  1. Under Discount Type, choose one:

    • Flat Amount: takes a fixed amount off.
    • Discount (%): takes a percentage off. Enter 1 to 100.
    • Free Shipping: removes the shipping fee. Digital products are removed from the product list, since they aren't shipped.
  2. For Flat Amount and Discount (%), enter the Discount Value.

  3. For Flat Amount, under How do you want to apply the discount?, choose:

    • Apply the discount once to the cart total: the amount comes off the order once. Example: the cart has 3 items totaling ₱250, and a ₱100 discount takes ₱100 off the order.
    • Customer saves money on every eligible item: the amount comes off each eligible item.

The discount never takes more than the price of the items it applies to.

Step 4: Choose what the discount applies to

  1. Under Select Products / Categories, choose:
    • All Products
    • Specific Categories: then pick one or more in Select Categories.
    • Specific Products: then pick one or more published products in Select Products.
  2. Under Store Locations, pick the store locations where the discount works. You must pick at least one.
  3. Under Customer, choose who can use it:
    • All Customers
    • Specific Customer Tags: then pick the tags in Select Customer Tags. Customers with at least one of these tags can use it.
    • Specific Customers: then pick customers in Select Customers. Only customers with a Registered or Verified account are listed. See How to Manage Your Contacts.

Step 5: Set the minimum requirement and usage limit

  1. Under Min. Requirements, choose:

    • None
    • Minimum purchase amount: enter the Amount the cart subtotal must reach.
    • Minimum quantity of items: enter the Quantity of items the cart must have.

If you choose Flat Amount with a minimum purchase amount lower than the discount, a warning explains that the discount will be capped at the price of a cheaper eligible item.

  2. For Coupon Code discounts, under Usage Limits, choose:

    • Limit to one use per customer
    • Limit the number of times this coupon can be used in total: enter the Maximum Usage.

Automatic discounts don't have usage limits.

Step 6: Set the dates

  1. Under Active Dates, pick the start date and enter the Start Time.
  2. To end the discount on a set date, tick Set End Date, then pick the End Date and enter the End Time. If you leave it unticked, the discount runs until you delete it.

Step 7: Choose whether it combines with other discounts (Scale)

At the bottom of the page:

  • Allow this discount to be combined with other product discounts.
  • Allow this discount to be combined with other shipping discounts. (not shown for Free Shipping)

On plans without this option, a crown icon shows next to the switches, and clicking one opens the upgrade window.

Step 8: Save

Click Save. You see Successfully added coupon code. or Successfully added automatic discount., and the discount appears in the table.

Step 9: See what your customers get at checkout

  • Coupon codes: in the order summary at checkout, under Use a code to get a discount, the customer types the code in Enter Discount Code and clicks Apply. The code shows as a tag. The customer can click the x on the tag to remove it.
  • Automatic discounts: they apply on their own when the cart meets the conditions. If a customer types the automatic discount's name as a code, they see Discount has already been applied automatically.

Step 10: View, edit or delete a discount

Philippine stores with the Senior/PWD Discount add-on also see a pinned Senior/PWD Discount row above the table, with an Active or Setup needed badge and an Edit or Set up button. It is a single per-store discount, so it is not listed in the table.

The table shows each discount's Discount Name / Code, Method, Discount Type, Value, Start Date, End Date (or No end date) and Status:

  • Not Activated: the start date and time haven't come yet.
  • Active: the discount is running.
  • Expired: the end date and time have passed.

Click the ... button on a row to:

  • View: see the discount's details.
  • Edit: change the discount in Edit Discount, then click Save. You see Successfully updated coupon code. or Successfully updated automatic discount. Edit only appears while the discount is Not Activated.
  • Delete: click Delete in Delete Coupon to confirm. You see Successfully deleted coupon code. or Successfully deleted automatic discount.

Verify It Worked

Success criteria:

  • You see Successfully added coupon code. or Successfully added automatic discount.
  • The discount is in the table with the right Value, dates and Status.
  • After the start time, the status is Active.
  • At checkout, a cart that meets the conditions gets the discount: the code applies with Apply, or the automatic discount shows on its own.

Troubleshooting

Common errors

  • "Special characters and spaces are not allowed in discount codes.": coupon codes can only use letters and numbers. Spaces can't be typed.
  • "Code cannot exceed 30 characters": shorten the name or code.
  • "Enter a discount percentage of at least 1%" or "Discount percentage should not exceed 100%": enter a percentage from 1 to 100.
  • "Required"* under Store Locations, Select Products, Select Categories, Select Customer Tags or Select Customers: pick at least one.
  • "Only one automatic discount can run at a time. Adjust the dates to remove the overlap.": another automatic discount runs during some of the same dates, including one with no end date. Change the dates, or delete the other discount.
  • "Discount combination is not allowed for your plan.": combining discounts needs the Scale plan.
  • I can't find Edit for my discount: Edit only shows before the discount starts. To change an Active or Expired discount, delete it and create a new one.

Messages your customers might see at checkout:

  • "Discount code not found.": the code is spelled differently (codes are case sensitive) or was deleted.
  • "Discount is inactive.": the start date and time haven't come yet.
  • "Discount is expired.": the end date and time have passed.
  • "Discount code not valid for this store location": the customer is shopping at a store location the discount doesn't include.
  • "Selected product(s) doesn't meet the discount required products." or "Selected product categories doesn't meet the discount required categories.": the cart has none of the products or categories the discount covers.
  • "Cart items subtotal does not meet the minimum purchase amount of …" or "Cart items subtotal does not meet the minimum item quantity of …": the cart is below your minimum.
  • The code is refused for a customer you didn't pick: when Customer is set to Specific Customer Tags or Specific Customers, only those customers can use it. Check the customer's tags or account in Contacts.
  • "Discount already used.": the code is set to one use per customer and this customer already used it.
  • "Discount code usage limit reached": the code reached its Maximum Usage.
  • "Discount code cannot be applied with existing discount(s).": an automatic discount is already applied and one of the two isn't set to combine.

Limitations & considerations

  • Discounts have no on/off switch. To stop a discount early, delete it.
  • Only one automatic discount can run at a time.
  • On Launch, Grow and Premium Trial, only one code counts per order.
  • On Scale, a customer can apply up to 3 codes in one order ("3 promo code limit reached." after that), and only when the discounts are set to combine with each other.
  • A Free Shipping discount can't be combined with other shipping discounts.
  • The dashboard doesn't check that the end date is after the start date. Check your dates before you save.
