Summary
Overview: Edit with AI turns an image in your Media Library into a new one. You can remove the background, improve quality or lighting, apply a filter, or put the product on a new background (a solid colour, your own picture, or one AI creates from your description). Every result is saved as a new image in your library, so your original stays unchanged.
Prerequisites:
- A store on the Launch, Grow, Scale or free trial plan.
- You are the store owner. Team members don't see Edit with AI.
- An image already in your Media Library. See How to Upload and Organize Your Media.
- Enough AI credits for the AI tools you want to use (see the table in Step 3). Filters and solid colour backgrounds don't need credits.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Open the AI editor
- In the sidebar, click Media Library.
- Click the image to open its Details window, then click Edit Image.
- On the Preview, click Edit with AI.
- The Edit Image window opens with a Powered by AI label and four tabs: Magic Eraser, Enhance, Filters and Background.
Step 2: Choose what to do
Remove the background (Magic Eraser)
- Open the Magic Eraser tab and click Magic Eraser.
- For best results, use a photo with clear contrast between the subject and background, good lighting with few shadows, and a single main subject.
Improve the image (Enhance)
- Open the Enhance tab.
- Click Image Quality to sharpen and improve the image, or
- Click Lighting, choose a style (Golden Hour, Cinematic, Studio Lighting, Spotlight, Light Source Left, Light Source Right or Light Source Rear), then click Apply Lighting.
Apply a filter (Filters)
- Open the Filters tab.
- Use the arrows to browse and click a filter: Original, Vintage, Black & White, Sepia, Dramatic, Warm, Cool, Fade, Vibrant or Soft.
- Click Save to keep it (see Step 4).
Change the background (Background)
- Open the Background tab and choose one of three options:
- Color: pick a colour next to Solid Background: and click Apply. You see Background applied successfully. The colour fills the see-through parts of the image, so remove the background with Magic Eraser first. Then click Save (see Step 4).
- Custom: under Upload your own background image., add a PNG, JPG or WebP picture up to 10 MB, then click Apply.
- AI: under Describe the background you want., type a description (for example, "A minimalist white studio backdrop with soft shadows") and click Generate with AI.
Step 3: Wait for the result
While an AI tool works, the preview shows a message such as Removing background..., Enhancing image... or Generating background... and "This may take a while...". The other tools are disabled until it finishes.
AI tools need a minimum AI credit balance to start:
| Tool | Minimum AI credits needed |
|---|---|
| Magic Eraser | 7 |
| Image Quality | 52 |
| Lighting | 14 |
| Custom background | 14 |
| AI background | 14 |
Magic Eraser, Image Quality, Lighting, Custom and AI results are saved to your Media Library automatically. A window appears, for example Background Removal Complete, Image Enhancement Complete or Background Replacement Complete, with a preview. Click Continue AI Editing to keep working on the new image.
Step 4: Save filter and colour changes
Filters and Color backgrounds aren't saved automatically.
- Check the Preview. Click Reset to go back to the image you started with.
- Click Save. The button shows Saving...
- You see Successfully saved all changes.
The saved image is named edited- followed by a number and the original title.
Verify It Worked
Success criteria:
- A new image appears at the top of your Media Library. The original image is still there.
- For AI tools, you saw a "Complete" window and a message such as Successfully completed background removal.
- Your AI credit balance went down after using an AI tool.
Troubleshooting
Common errors
- "You have no AI credits." or "Insufficient AI credits. Top up at least 14." (the number depends on the tool): click Top Up Now to buy more credits. See How to Buy AI Credits.
- "Failed to remove image background. Please try again.", "Failed to enhance image", "Failed to replace background" or "An unexpected error occurred while processing the image.": try again. If it keeps failing, try a different image.
- "Feature disabled due to image access restrictions" or a message asking you to re-upload the image: this is an older image the editor can't open. Download the image, upload it again, and edit the new copy.
- "Failed to save processed image to Media Library" or "Failed to save edited image": the result couldn't be added to your library. Check that you haven't reached your storage limit, then try again.
- I don't see Edit with AI: only the store owner can use it. Log in with the store owner's account.
- Generate with AI is greyed out: type a description of the background first.
- Save is greyed out: you haven't changed the image yet, or an AI tool is still working.
Limitations & considerations
- AI tools work on images only, not videos or documents.
- Each saved result is a new image and uses storage. Delete the versions you don't need (see How to Delete Media from Your Library).
- Using an AI tool deducts AI credits from your store's balance.
- AI results can vary. If you don't like a result, run the tool again or try a different option.
- Closing the window discards unsaved filter and colour changes. AI results already saved stay in your library.
