Summary

Overview: You can let customers pay in cash when they receive their order (Cash on Delivery) or when they collect it from your store (Cash on Pickup). Cash payments are not set up in Settings → Payments. You turn them on for each shipping method in Settings → Shipping.

Prerequisites:

  • A store on the Launch, Grow, Scale or Premium Trial plan.
  • Store owner access, or a team member with Store settings & administration access.
  • The shipping method you want to use. Cash is available on these shipping methods:
Shipping method Cash on Delivery Cash on Pickup
Standard Delivery (Philippine stores) Yes No
Manual Shipping by Customer Yes No
Manual Shipping by Merchant Yes No
Store Pickup No Yes
Same Day Delivery and Scheduled Delivery - Lalamove No No
USPS (US stores) No No

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Open the shipping method

  1. In the sidebar, click Settings, then Shipping.
  2. Find the shipping method's card. For example, Store Pickup for Cash on Pickup, or Manual Shipping by Customer for Cash on Delivery.
  3. Click Set Up (if you haven't set this method up yet) or Manage.

Step 2: Choose the cash payment option

  1. On the Settings tab, find Payment Option (Choose at least one).
  2. Tick Cash on Delivery or Cash on Pickup. An option that the shipping method doesn't support is greyed out.
  3. Fill in the rest of the shipping method's settings if you haven't yet.
  4. Click Save.

Repeat these steps for each shipping method where you want to accept cash.

Step 3: Make sure the shipping method is on

Back on Settings → Shipping, check that the switch on the shipping method's card is on. Customers only see shipping methods that are turned on.

Step 4: See what your customers get at checkout

  1. The customer chooses a shipping method at checkout.
  2. If you ticked a cash option for that method, the payment list shows Cash on Delivery or Cash on Pickup.
  3. The customer chooses it and clicks Pay Now to place the order. No payment is taken online.

The customer gets an order confirmation right after placing the order. The order's payment status is Awaiting Payment until the cash is paid.

Step 5: Mark the order as paid

For Cash on Delivery orders with Manual Shipping by Customer or Manual Shipping by Merchant, and for Cash on Pickup orders with Store Pickup:

  1. In the sidebar, click Orders, then open the order.
  2. After you receive the cash, set Payment Status to Paid.
  3. Click Update, then click Update again to confirm (Are you sure you want to update this order?).

For Cash on Delivery orders shipped with Standard Delivery, the courier collects the cash from the customer. You can't change the payment status of these orders on the order page.

Verify It Worked

Success criteria:

  • After you click Save, a success message appears.
  • When you open the shipping method again, Cash on Delivery or Cash on Pickup is still ticked.
  • On your store's checkout page, the cash option appears after you choose that shipping method.

Troubleshooting

Common errors

  • "Please select at least one payment option.": every shipping method needs at least one payment option. Tick one, then click Save.
  • The cash checkbox is greyed out: that shipping method doesn't support it. Use the table under Prerequisites to pick a method that does.
  • The cash option doesn't show at checkout:
    • Check that you ticked it for the shipping method the customer chose, and that the method's switch is on.
    • Cash options don't show when the cart has only digital products.
  • A customer sees "Maximum order amount for COD payment is 50,000 PHP.": Cash on Delivery orders can't go over 50,000 PHP. The customer needs to split the order or choose another payment method.

Limitations & considerations

  • Cash on Delivery and Cash on Pickup are set per shipping method, not on the Payments page.
  • US stores see only Cash on Delivery and Cash on Pickup in the Payment Option list.
  • In the Orders page's Payment Type filter, cash orders are listed as COD and COP.
  • The Payment Option list for Philippine stores also includes Bank Transfer, where the customer pays into an account shown as your store name c/o Prosperna Philippines Inc. To have customers pay into your own accounts instead, see How to Set Up Manual Payment Methods.
