Summary
Overview: Blogs lets you write articles for your online store, such as news, guides and product stories, to promote your brand and help shoppers find you on search engines. You can write a post yourself or have Max AI draft it. You can publish it now, schedule it for later, or save it as a draft. Published posts appear on your online store's blog page, where shoppers can read and comment on them.
Prerequisites:
- A store on the Launch, Grow, Scale or Premium Trial plan.
- Store owner access, or a team member with Blogs access.
- The free Blogs app activated in Marketplace (Step 1). You can write posts without it, but your online store won't show them until it's activated.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Activate the Blogs app
- In the sidebar, click Marketplace.
- Open the Blogs app.
- Click Free — Activate. You see App activated successfully! and the button changes to Activated.
If you see Not available in your country., the Blogs app can't be activated for your store's country.
Step 2: Start a new post
In the sidebar, click Marketing, then Blogs.
The side menu shows Posts (published), Drafts and Comments. Click Create a Blog.
If you have Max AI access, a Create a Blog Post window asks you to choose:
- Create from Scratch: write the post yourself. Continue with Step 3.
- Generate with AI: opens the Max AI Blog Writer, which drafts the post, image and SEO tags for you.
Without Max AI access, the editor opens straight away.
Step 3: Write the content
In the Content section:
- Enter a Title (up to 100 characters).
- Write the post in the editor. You can use headings, bold, italic, underline, lists, indents, alignment, text and background colors, quotes and links.
- To add a picture, click the image button in the toolbar and choose an image from your Media Library.
- Click Expand Editor for a full-screen editor. It has its own Save Draft and Publish buttons. Back to blogs takes you back to your blog list (you're asked first if you have unsaved changes).
The author name comes from your author profile. To change your author name, click My Author Profile at the top of the Content section. A new name only applies to posts you create after the change. See How to Set Up Your Author Profile.
Step 4: Fill in the SEO details
The Search Engine Optimization section controls how your post looks in search results. On the Basics tab:
| Field | Notes |
|---|---|
| Slug | The end of the post's web address. Leave it empty to create it from the title. Lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens only, up to 50 characters |
| Keyword | Required. Add at least one keyword |
| Meta Title | Required. Aim for 50 characters or fewer. A counter shows Optimal length, Near preferred limit or Past preferred limit |
| Meta Description | Required. Aim for 170 characters or fewer |
| Featured Image | Optional. Choose from your Media Library. Max size 10 MB, at least 250 × 250 pixels, .jpg, .png or .webp |
Click Generate with AI next to Keyword to have AI suggest a meta title, meta description and keywords from your blog title. New keywords are added to the ones you already have.
Other tabs:
- Robots: switch on No Index to keep search engines from listing the post, or No Follow so they don't follow its links. Advanced Robots (No Archive, No Snippet, No Image Index) is for Scale and Premium Trial.
- Advanced (Redirect, Rating) and Schema (schema type BlogPosting, Article or NewsArticle, author and publisher): Scale and Premium Trial only. On other plans, clicking these tabs shows an upgrade message.
Step 5: Choose a category (optional)
- In the Categories section, under Select a Category, tick the categories this post belongs to.
- To make a new one, click Add Category. In the Add Category window:
- Choose the Category Type: Main Category, Sub Category or Sub of Subcategory.
- For a Sub Category, choose its parent under Blog Category. For a Sub of Subcategory, also choose the Sub Category.
- Enter the Category Name and click Save.
Step 6: Publish, schedule or save as a draft
At the bottom of the page:
- Publish: the post goes live now. You see Successfully created a blog post.
- Schedule: click the arrow next to Publish, then Schedule. In Schedule Publish, choose Tomorrow Morning (9:00 AM), Tomorrow Afternoon (1:00 PM) or Next Week (Mon, 9:00 AM), or click Pick date & time. Click Done. The main button now reads Schedule. Click it.
- Save as Draft: saves the post without publishing it. It appears under Drafts.
All required fields must be filled in, even for a draft.
If you leave the page with unsaved changes, the Unsaved Changes box lets you Save as Draft, Continue Leaving or Cancel.
Step 7: Manage your posts
On Posts and Drafts, use Search... to find a post. The Posts table shows Blog, Author, Published Date, Share and Actions.
Actions:
- View (published posts): opens the post on your online store in a new tab.
- Publish (drafts): publishes the draft.
- Unpublish (published posts): moves the post back to Drafts.
- Edit: opens the post. On a published post, click Update to save changes, or Unpublish & Save to save it as a draft.
- Duplicate: makes a copy in Drafts with "(Copy)" added to the title. You see Blog Successfully Duplicated. Click Start Editing to open the copy, or Close.
- Delete: click Delete in the Delete Blog box to confirm.
Use the share icon in the Share column to share a published post on social media.
Step 8: Manage comments
Shoppers can comment on your published posts. Comments show on your online store straight away.
- On Blogs, click Comments.
- The table shows Created Date, Name, Email, Blog, Comments and Status.
- Under Actions, choose View, Reply, Unpublish (hide the comment) or Publish (show it again), or Delete.
Step 9: See your blog on your online store
Your blog is at your store's web address followed by /blogs, for example yourstore.com/blogs. Each post has its own page at /blogs/ plus its slug.
Verify It Worked
Success criteria:
- The post appears under Posts with today's date (or under Drafts if you saved it as a draft).
- Clicking View opens the post on your online store.
- A scheduled post appears on your online store's blog page only after its publish date and time.
Troubleshooting
Common errors
- "Please complete all the required fields.": fill in Title and the post content, plus the SEO fields.
- "Please complete all the required SEO fields.": fill in Keyword, Meta Title and Meta Description on the Basics tab.
- "Please complete all required fields before saving as draft.": drafts need the same required fields as published posts.
- "Slug can only contain lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens...": remove spaces, capital letters and symbols from the Slug, and don't start or end it with a hyphen.
- "Slug must be 50 characters or less": shorten the slug.
- "Something went wrong with creating a blog post.": try again. If it keeps happening, contact support.
- My post doesn't show on my online store: check that the Blogs app is activated in Marketplace (Step 1), that the post is under Posts (not Drafts), and that its publish time has passed.
- "Blog not found. It may have been deleted or the link is invalid.": the post was deleted or the link is wrong. Click Back to Blogs.
Limitations & considerations
- Meta Title and Meta Description lengths are guidelines. You can still save when you go past them.
- Deleting a post can't be undone. Use Unpublish if you might want it back.
- The Blogs app is free on Launch, Grow, Scale and Premium Trial.
- To give a team member Blogs access, activate the Blogs app first. The Blogs permission only appears in user permissions after that.
