Summary

Overview: Categories group related products, for example Desserts for your cakes and ice cream. Each main category can have an image and its own subcategories. On your online store, shoppers can tap a category to see only its products, or tick categories and subcategories in the product filter. You decide the order categories appear in, and the order of products inside each category.

Prerequisites:

  • A store on the Launch, Grow, Scale or free trial plan.
  • Store owner access, or a team member with Categories access.
  • For a category image: the image uploaded to your Media Library, or ready to upload (at least 250 x 250 pixels, up to 10 MB, .jpg, .png or .webp).

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Open the Categories page

  1. In the sidebar, click Products, then Categories.
  2. The table lists your main categories with their Position, Image, Main Category name, No. of Subcategories, Date Created, Date Updated and Actions.
  3. Type in the Search... box to find a category, or click a column heading to sort by it.

Step 2: Create a main category

  1. Click Create Category.
  2. In Create Category, leave Category Type as Main Category.
  3. Type the Category Name.
  4. Under Category Image (optional), click Add Image, choose an image from your Media Library or upload a new one, then click Select. The image must be at least 250 x 250 pixels and up to 10 MB.
  5. Click Save. You see Successfully created main category.

Step 3: Add subcategories

  1. Click Create Category.
  2. Change Category Type to Subcategory.
  3. Under Select Main Category Name, choose the main category.
  4. Under Subcategories, click + Add More and type a name in Enter New Subcategory. Click + Add More again for each extra subcategory. Click the trash icon to remove a row.
  5. Click Save. You see Successfully created subcategory.

You can also add subcategories while editing a category (Step 4).

Step 4: Edit a category

  1. Click the category's name, or click ... in its Actions column, then View.
  2. The Category Details tab shows the Preview image, the Main Category name, Date Created, Date Updated and its Subcategories.
  3. Click Edit. Then:
    • Change the name in Main Category.
    • Rename a subcategory by editing its box, remove one with the trash icon, or click + Add More to add one.
    • To change the image, click the pencil icon on the Preview image. In Edit Category Image, click Add Image to choose a new one, or Remove Image then Remove to delete it. Click Apply.
  4. Click Save. You see Successfully updated category. Changes, including the image, are only kept after you click Save. Click Cancel to discard them.
  5. Click the back arrow next to Main Category to return to the list.

Step 5: Put products in a category

You choose a product's categories and subcategories on the product's own page when you add or edit it. See How to Add Your First Product and How to Edit, Publish or Delete a Product.

When you import products from a CSV file, the categories named in the file are created for you if they don't exist yet. See How to Import Products in Bulk.

Step 6: Change the order of products in a category

  1. Open the category (Step 4) and click the Products tab.
  2. As the page says, Drag and drop products to reorder them on your online store. Drag a product card by its image and drop it in its new place.
  3. The new order is saved when you drop the card. You see Successfully updated product category position.

Step 7: Change the order of your categories

  1. On the Categories page, click Edit Position. Checkboxes appear next to each category.
  2. Tick the categories you want to move.
  3. Next to Move ... categories to:, choose Position and type the position number, or choose Top or Bottom.
  4. Click Move. You see Successfully updated category position. Click Cancel to leave without moving anything.

Your online store lists categories in this Position order.

Step 8: Delete a category

  1. On the Categories page, click ... in the category's Actions column, then Delete.
  2. In Delete Category (Do you want to delete this category?), click Confirm. You see Successfully deleted category.

Step 9: See how categories appear on your online store

  • On your products page, a row of your categories (with their images) appears above the products. Shoppers tap a category to show only its products, and tap it again to show all products.
  • If your store uses the menu view, tapping a category scrolls to that category's section. Categories with no products at the shopper's store location are hidden.
  • The product filter has a Categories section with a checkbox for each category and its subcategories. Ticking a subcategory also ticks its main category.

Verify It Worked

Success criteria:

  • You see Successfully created main category., Successfully created subcategory. or Successfully updated category.
  • The category appears on the Categories page with the right No. of Subcategories.
  • On your online store's products page, the category appears in the category row and in the Categories filter.

Troubleshooting

Common errors

  • "Category name already exists.": another category already uses that name. Capital letters don't count as a difference, so Shoes and shoes are the same name. Choose a different name.
  • "Subcategory name already exists.": the main category already has a subcategory with that name, or you typed the same name twice. Use a different name.
  • "Required*" under Category Name or a subcategory box: the box is empty. Type a name, or remove the empty subcategory row.
  • "Image size must have a min resolution of 250 x 250 pixels.": choose an image at least 250 pixels wide and tall.
  • "10 MB max size limit reached. Try again.": choose an image smaller than 10 MB.
  • I can't open a category or don't see Create Category: opening a category needs Edit access to Categories, and Create Category and Edit Position need Create access. Ask the store owner.
  • A category doesn't show in the menu view of my online store: the menu view hides categories that have no products at the shopper's store location. Add products to the category at that location.

Limitations & considerations

  • Categories have one level of subcategories. A subcategory can't have its own subcategories.
  • Only main categories have images. Subcategories have a name only.
  • Category images are chosen through your Media Library.
  • The Edit Position checkboxes only appear after you click Edit Position.
