Summary
Overview: You can delete one image, video or document at a time, or select several and delete them together. Deleting is permanent. Deleted images and videos are also removed from any product that uses them, and deleting images and documents frees up storage.
Prerequisites:
- A store on the Launch, Grow, Scale or free trial plan.
- Store owner access, or a team member with Store settings & administration access.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Check where the file is used
Before you delete, think about where you used the file. Deleting can't be undone.
- Products: the image or video is removed from every product that uses it.
- Other places, such as a category image, blog post, store logo or a page: these aren't updated. Because the file itself is deleted, these places may show a broken or missing image. Replace the image there first.
Step 2: Delete a single file
- In the sidebar, click Media Library.
- Open the file:
- In the grid view, click its tile, then click Delete in the Details window.
- In the list view, click the ... icon on its row and choose Delete.
- A confirmation appears, for example Delete Image with "Are you sure you want to delete this image? This image will be deleted forever."
- Click Delete to confirm, or Cancel to keep the file.
- You see Successfully deleted image. (or Successfully deleted video. / Successfully deleted document.).
Step 3: Delete several files at once
- In the Media Library, tick the files you want to delete:
- In the grid view, tick the checkbox at the top-right of each tile. Select all ticks every item on the current page.
- In the list view, tick the checkbox on each row.
- In the grid view, your selection is kept when you switch between All, Images, Videos and Documents, or between pages, so you can select different types together. To select across pages or types, use the grid view.
- Check the number on the Delete button matches the number of files you meant to select.
- Click Delete followed by the number selected, for example Delete (5).
- A confirmation appears, for example Delete 5 items with "Are you sure you want to delete these 5 selected items? This action cannot be undone and the items will be deleted forever."
- Click Delete. The button shows Deleting... while it works.
- You see Successfully deleted 5 media items. (or Successfully deleted media item. for one) and your selection is cleared.
Verify It Worked
Success criteria:
- The files no longer appear in the Media Library, including when you search for their titles.
- Products that used a deleted image or video no longer show it.
- After deleting images or documents, the Storage Usage meter goes down. If it hasn't changed after a single delete, refresh the page.
Troubleshooting
Common errors
- "No media item deleted.": none of the selected files could be deleted, for example because they were already deleted. Refresh the page and check the list.
- "Media item not found.": the file was already deleted. Refresh the page.
- "Failed to delete image." (or video / document): the delete didn't go through. Try again.
- A category, blog post or page now shows a broken image: the image used there was deleted. Choose a new image for it.
Limitations & considerations
- Deleted files can't be restored. Upload the file again if you need it back.
- Deleting an image doesn't delete the edited copies or AI-created images made from it. Those are separate files and must be deleted on their own.
- Deleting a video only removes the link from your library and products. The video stays on YouTube or Vimeo.
- Video links don't use storage, so deleting them doesn't change Storage Usage.
