Summary
Overview: A digital product is a file your customers buy and download, such as an e-book, a template or a design pack. You upload the file to the product. When an order with only digital products is paid online, it's marked Completed automatically, and the customer can download the file from their order. Digital products need no shipping, and you choose which online payment methods customers can use to buy them.
Prerequisites:
- A store on the Launch, Grow, Scale or Premium Trial plan.
- At least one active store location. See How to Add Your Store Location.
- At least one online payment method set up. See How to Set Up Payments for Your Store.
- The file you want to sell, up to 10 MB.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Create the digital product
- In the sidebar, click Products, then Inventory.
- Click Add Product, then Add a Product ▶, then Digital Product.
- Fill in the product details, such as the name, price and categories. See How to Add Your First Product for these fields.
- In the Digital File section:
- Digital Product File (required): upload the file customers will download. You can upload one file, up to 10 MB. Use one of these types: .jpg, .png, .gif, .pdf, .docx, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx, .odt or .zip. To deliver several files, put them in one .zip file.
- Thumbnail Image (required): an image that represents the product in your store.
- At the bottom of the form, tick I agree to adhere to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) Terms of Service. Save stays greyed out until you tick it.
- Click Save.
New products are saved as Unpublished. Publish the product when you're ready to sell it. See How to Edit, Publish or Delete a Product.
To replace the file later, open the product, upload the new file in Digital Product File, tick the agreement, and click Save.
Step 2: Choose how customers can pay for digital products (Philippine stores)
- In the sidebar, click Settings, then Digital Products.
- On Digital Product Payment Settings, under Payment Options (Choose at least one:), tick the methods customers can use:
- Credit Card
- E-wallets
- Over the Counter
- Click Save. You see Successfully updated digital product payment settings.
These options decide what customers see at checkout when their cart has only digital products. A method also has to be available in your payment setup to appear.
Step 3: See what your customers get
- On the product page, the customer adds the digital product to the cart. A digital product can be added only once per cart, with a quantity of 1.
- At checkout, a cart with only digital products skips shipping. The customer chooses one of the payment methods you allowed.
- The customer ticks I agree to adhere to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) below the payment section, then places the order.
- When an order with only digital products is paid online, its status changes to Completed.
- The customer signs in to their account on your store, opens My Orders, and opens the order. Each digital product has a DOWNLOAD link, and DOWNLOAD ALL downloads every file in the order. The links only appear once the order is Completed.
Order completed emails also include a DOWNLOAD link for each digital product.
Verify It Worked
Success criteria:
- The product is listed on Products → Inventory as a digital product, and opening it shows your file in Digital Product File.
- You see Successfully updated digital product payment settings. after saving the payment options.
- After a test purchase, the order is Completed and DOWNLOAD links appear on the order in the customer's My Orders.
Troubleshooting
Common errors
- "Choose at least one payment option.": you tried to untick the last payment option. Keep at least one ticked.
- Save is greyed out on the product: tick I agree to adhere to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) Terms of Service at the bottom of the form.
- The file won't upload: check that it's 10 MB or smaller and is one of the file types in Step 1. If it's bigger, compress it into a .zip file.
- "Digital product can only be added once to your cart.": shown to customers who add the same digital product twice. One copy is enough, since the customer downloads the file.
- "Bank transfer orders cannot have a digital product." or "Payment Link orders cannot have a digital product.": shown to customers who choose Bank Transfer, Manual Payments or Pay by Invoice for a cart that includes a digital product. They need to choose an online payment method.
- The customer can't see the DOWNLOAD links: the links only show on Completed orders. Check the order's status in Orders.
- A download link from an email no longer works: download links expire 7 days after they're created. The customer can open the order in My Orders to get a fresh link.
Limitations & considerations
- Each digital product holds one file, up to 10 MB.
- Carts with only digital products can't be paid with Cash on Delivery, Cash on Pickup, Bank Transfer, Manual Payments or Pay by Invoice. Store Pickup isn't offered for them either.
- Orders that include a digital product can't be paid with Bank Transfer, Manual Payments or Pay by Invoice.
- Only orders with digital products alone are marked Completed automatically on payment. Orders that mix digital and physical products follow your usual order process.
- US stores: Credit Card, E-wallets and Over the Counter aren't offered at checkout, so the Digital Products payment options don't apply. Card payments through a payment gateway you've connected aren't controlled by this page.
